Although a day that is usually pushed aside or overlooked, Mother's day is just as important as any other holiday celebrated throughout the year. The history of this Holiday stems deep into the roots of American History. Join us as we venture into the beginning of a national holiday, and one women's fight to create a holiday for Moms everywhere!

To understand the importance of a Holiday you must first understand how it all began. The modern variation of the holiday was first celebrated in 1908. This is when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.  This very church now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine! Anna's fight to make Mother's Day a recognized Holiday in the United started in 1905, The same year that her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, Died. Her mother was a peace activist who cared for the wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. She often created Mother's Day Work Clubs to Address public health issues. This fire is what ignited Anna's will to continue in her mother's footsteps. She is quoted saying a mother is "The person who has done more for you than anyone in the world".

In 1908, The U.S. Congress rejected a Proposal to make Mother's Day an official Holiday, joking that the would then have to create "Mother-In-Law's Day". However, with consistent perseverance and the fire that her mother help create, by 1911 all U.S states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother's Day as a local Holiday! The first being West Virginia, this is the same state that Jarvis called home. The holiday was sealed in the history books as a national holiday in 1914 on the second Sunday of May.
